Geocaching gear that earns its place

Almost every argument about geocaching gear is really an argument about accuracy: why the arrow says you are standing on it when you plainly are not. These pages cover what each kind of device does well, where it fails, and what actually improves a fix in the field.

The accuracy problem, stated plainly

Every conversation about geocaching gear circles back to the same complaint: the device says zero metres and the cache is not there.

Two separate errors combine to produce that. The first is your receiver’s error. A consumer fix is accurate to a few metres under good conditions and considerably worse under tree cover, beside buildings or in a valley. The second is the owner’s error, because the coordinates on the listing were taken by another person with another device under the same physical constraints, possibly years ago and possibly in a hurry.

Neither error is a defect. Both are what satellite positioning does. The practical consequence is that the last ten metres of any find are done with your eyes rather than the screen, why that happens has a page of its own, and the gear that helps most is whatever gets you reliably to that ten-metre circle without flattening its own battery.

How these pages are organised

The pages below take one category each and try to answer the same three questions: what does it actually do, where does it fail, and who is it for.

They avoid two things deliberately. There are no scores, because a device that is right for a weekend in a city park is wrong for three days on a ridge and a single number cannot carry that. And there are no purchase links, because this is a reference rather than a shop, nothing here earns anything from what you decide.

Where a page describes behaviour that changed with a firmware or app update, it says when. Where a claim is about how satellite positioning works rather than about a specific product, it is written to outlast the product.

What experienced cachers actually carry

Strip out the arguments and the kit that survives long-term use is unglamorous and short.

A phone with offline maps and a power bank. A pen that works when wet and cold, because a cache you cannot sign is a cache you did not find. A small light that is not the phone torch, so the battery that navigates is not the battery that illuminates. A length of stiff wire with a hook, for retrieving containers from places arms do not reach.

Everything above that is specialisation. The handheld comes out for long remote days, the external receiver for heavy canopy, the beacon-capable unit for the small number of caches that use one.

Batteries end more days than accuracy does

Accuracy is what gets argued about and power is what actually decides how long you can stay out.

A phone running a mapping app with the screen on and the receiver active is working about as hard as it can. Cold weather makes that worse, and cold is exactly when you are out walking. A day that ends early almost never ends because the fix was poor; it ends because the device that holds the map, the listings, the torch and the phone number reached ten per cent at three in the afternoon.

This is the single strongest practical argument for a dedicated handheld, and it has nothing to do with precision. A unit running on two AA cells will do a long day and can be revived from a shop or a coat pocket. It is also the argument for a power bank, which solves most of the same problem for considerably less money.

Whatever you carry, the useful habit is to know roughly what your setup does in hours rather than in percentages, and to have found that out somewhere other than the far end of a walk.

Where money is genuinely worth spending

Most of the cost in this hobby is optional. Three things are not, and none of them is a receiver.

A pen that works. Cold, wet, upside down, on damp paper. A cache you cannot sign is a cache you did not find, and the pens that fail are the free ones. This is the cheapest upgrade available and the one most often skipped.

Offline maps. Coverage fails in exactly the terrain that makes caching worth doing. An app that has already downloaded the map and the listings is the difference between a walk and a wasted drive — which apps manage it well is covered for Android and for iPhone.

Dry storage. A small sealed bag for the phone. Not for the weather forecast you have, for the one you get.

Beyond those, spending is specialisation rather than improvement, and the pages below are about which specialisations pay for themselves and which are bought and left in a drawer.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a dedicated GPS unit for geocaching?

No. A modern phone finds the overwhelming majority of caches, and every major listing service has an app. A handheld earns its place in specific conditions, heavy tree cover, canyon walls, multi-day trips away from a charger, and weather that would end a phone.

Starting with the phone you already own is the right call. Buy a handheld when you can name the situation that made you want one.

Why is my phone always a few metres off?

Because a consumer satellite fix under real conditions is a few metres off. Signals bounce off buildings and rock, tree canopy attenuates them, and the position your phone reports is a best estimate rather than a measurement. The owner's coordinates carry their own error too, so the two errors stack.

Does an external receiver actually help?

Sometimes, and less than people expect. It can improve the fix under canopy and on multi-band hardware, but it does not fix bad owner coordinates, which is a large share of the cases where a cache seems to be in the wrong place.

Are paid geocaching apps worth it?

It depends entirely on whether you need offline maps. If you cache where there is signal, free tiers are usually sufficient. If you cache where there is not, offline map support is the single feature that justifies paying, and it is worth testing before you are somewhere without a connection.

What gear matters more than the receiver?

A charged battery, a pen that works in the rain, and knowing where you parked. Most days that end badly do not end badly because of the device.
