The iOS options are fewer than on Android and the platform behaves differently in ways that matter in the field: particularly around background positioning and how aggressively the system reclaims memory.

A narrower shelf
There have always been fewer geocaching apps on iOS than on Android, and the gap is structural rather than accidental. Platform rules around background execution, file access and hardware interfaces made some of the more inventive third-party approaches harder to build and harder to keep working across system updates.
The practical result is that most iPhone cachers use the official app for whichever listing service they are on, and the interesting decisions are about configuration rather than selection.
What actually differs from Android
Three things, and only one of them is about the app.
Background positioning. iOS is firm about what a backgrounded app may do. Navigating to a cache with the app open is unaffected. Anything that expects to keep recording while you use the camera, send a message or lock the phone deserves a test before you depend on it. The behaviour has changed across system versions more than once.
Memory pressure. A backgrounded app can be reclaimed, and when you return to it you may find it restarting rather than resuming. If you have spent five minutes setting up a filtered list, that is irritating; if you were mid-way through a multi-stage cache with stage coordinates on screen, it is worse. Write down anything you cannot afford to lose.
Offline storage. The mechanics of downloading and keeping map regions differ, and so does how the system treats that storage when space runs low. A phone that is nearly full may quietly discard cached map data at the worst possible moment.
Accuracy is hardware, not platform
It is common to hear that one platform is more accurate than the other. It is not a claim that survives contact with the detail.
What determines a fix is the receiver in the specific handset, the conditions overhead, and whether the phone supports more than one satellite frequency band. A recent multi-band phone of either kind performs visibly better beneath tree canopy and beside buildings than an older single-band phone of either kind. The operating system is not the variable.
The owner’s coordinate error is also unchanged by any of this, and on a badly co-ordinated cache it is the larger of the two errors by some margin.
A setup that holds up
The arrangement that survives a long day is much the same as on Android and just as unexciting.
Download the region before you leave. Confirm in airplane mode that both the map and the listings open. Carry a power bank. Keep the screen off between caches. And keep a note, on paper or in a plain text file that does not need the app, of where you parked and what you are looking for.
The most common way an iPhone-only day goes wrong is not accuracy. It is a flat battery at four in the afternoon, some distance from the car, with the map on the dead device.
Notifications and the caches you never see

Most apps can alert you when a cache is published near a location you care about. On iOS the permission for that is granted once and then quietly forgotten, and the failure mode is silent — you simply never learn that anything was published.
If the first-to-find race matters to you, verify the alerts actually arrive rather than assuming. If it does not matter, turning them off entirely is a reasonable choice; a hobby that pings you is a different hobby.
What the blue dot is actually telling you
The circle drawn around your position on the map is not a decoration and it is not the cache’s margin of error. It is the app’s estimate of how confident the phone is about where you are.
When that circle is large, the arrow and the distance are being computed from a position the phone itself does not trust. Walking faster does not help; the circle shrinks when the phone gets a better view of more satellites, which usually means stepping out from under canopy or away from a wall for thirty seconds.
The useful habit is to look at the circle before believing the distance. A reading of two metres inside a twelve-metre circle is not a two-metre reading. Cachers who learn to read the two numbers together stop trusting the arrow at exactly the moment it stops deserving it, which saves a great deal of searching in the wrong place.
When the app is not the problem
A recurring frustration on iPhone is a cache that reads as fifteen metres away no matter which app is open. At that point it is worth eliminating the phone from the enquiry.
Open a second app and compare. If both agree, the phone is doing what it can and the difference is either terrain or the listing’s own coordinates. If the two apps disagree substantially, the one to trust is whichever has the smaller accuracy circle at that moment, not the one you prefer. Apps differ in how they smooth and present the same underlying fix, and a confident-looking arrow is not evidence of a confident position.

iOS manages background activity firmly, and an app that is not in the foreground may have its positioning throttled or be suspended entirely. For navigation to a cache this is usually invisible; for anything that records a track while you do something else, it is worth testing before relying on it.
Do I need to pay for an iPhone geocaching app?
Only for offline capability, in practice. If you cache with a signal the free tier is generally enough. If you cache without one, offline maps and offline listings are what you are buying and they are worth it.
Can I use my iPhone as my only device?
