Why people build
Buying a container solves the problem. Building one is where a lot of the hobby’s pleasure lives.
A well-made hide that reveals itself only when you understand the trick is genuinely delightful, and the logs on those caches read differently from the logs on ordinary ones. People remember the moment the thing turned out not to be what it looked like.
None of this page is discouragement. It is about the small number of choices that turn a good build into somebody else’s afternoon.
The one hard rule
Do not build anything that a stranger could read as a device.
This is not about intent and it is not about probability. It is about the fact that the reading is made by somebody who has never heard of geocaching, in a few seconds, from the outside.
Concretely, that rules out:
- sealed pipe sections, particularly capped at both ends
- anything wrapped in tape, especially bundled
- visible wire, exposed circuit boards, anything that reads as electronics
- magnetic attachment to public street furniture, railings, signs or benches
There are elegant, imaginative containers that avoid every one of those. The constraint is narrower than it sounds and it rules out exactly the shapes that cause incidents.
Camouflage cuts both ways
In a wood, camouflage is the craft. Something that looks like part of the setting until you know better is the best version of what a hide can be, and natural settings tolerate it because an accidental finder there is not alarmed.
In a town, the same instinct works against you. The more concealed and unmarked an object is in a public place, the worse it reads. Urban hides succeed by being unremarkable rather than by being invisible, and they still need the label.
Seals, again
Home builds fail for exactly the same reason bought containers do, and builders make the mistake more often because attention goes into the visible cleverness.
Whatever the shape, the closure needs a compressible gasket that stays flexible when cold. A tight push-fit is not a seal once temperature cycling starts.
Test properly: leave the finished container outdoors through a real winter with paper inside, somewhere you can retrieve it. One season of freeze and thaw tells you what a year of inspecting the lid will not.
Modified gear
The other half of DIY is adapting equipment rather than containers: mounts, cases, extended antennas, holders that survive being dropped.
Two things worth saying. First, anything attached to a phone or receiver in wet weather needs to fail gracefully; a mount that traps water against a device is worse than no mount. Second, keep modifications reversible where you can. The hobby is full of clever permanent alterations that became a problem at the next firmware update or the next phone.
The most-used piece of DIY equipment in geocaching is not any of this. It is a length of stiff wire with a hook on the end, for retrieving containers from places arms do not reach.
Start by copying
The best route into building containers is not designing one. It is finding a hide that delighted you, working out how it was made, and making one like it.
This is not a lack of originality. It is how the craft has always propagated. Almost every clever container type in the ground somewhere is a variation on something the owner found elsewhere and wanted to try. The community’s inventiveness is cumulative rather than individual.
The practical advantage is that a copied design has already been tested by weather and by finders. You inherit the parts that worked, and your own contribution is the variation.
What to do about the electronics question
Home-made caches involving batteries, lights, switches or small circuits are a genuine sub-culture, and they collide with the rest of this section for an obvious reason.
An unmarked box containing wiring and a battery is the exact object described on the safety pages as the thing that goes wrong. That does not make electronic caches unacceptable; it makes the labelling and placement rules non-negotiable rather than advisory. Everything visible, everything labelled, and nothing placed where a member of the public will encounter it unexpectedly.
There is a practical constraint too. A cache that depends on a battery is a cache that stops working silently, and neither the finder nor the owner can distinguish that from a missing container. Anything electronic needs a maintenance interval set by the battery rather than by the logbook, and an honest answer about whether you will keep to it.
Building for the person who arrives second
The failure mode specific to home-made containers is that they are designed around the moment of discovery and not around the two hundred finds that follow.
A mechanism that requires a knack works beautifully when its maker demonstrates it and badly when a stranger in gloves attempts it in the rain. A lid that has to be aligned precisely gets forced. A part that can be removed will eventually be removed and not replaced, and a cache whose puzzle depends on a component that has gone is a cache nobody can log.
The build habits that survive are the dull ones. Nothing that comes apart into pieces small enough to lose. No step that needs explaining beyond what the listing says. A logbook reachable without disassembling the mechanism, so a finder who cannot work it out can still sign. And a spare of any part that is doing the interesting work, kept at home, because you will need it.

What should I never build?
