Opencaching networks by country
Four countries, four databases, four sets of rules. The national Opencaching nodes share a name and a philosophy and almost nothing else, which is why the honest way to describe them is one at a time.

Why these have to be described separately
It would be convenient to write one page called “Opencaching” and be done. That page would be wrong in a way that matters to anyone planning a trip: the nodes do not share data. Turning up in Poland with a German account and a downloaded German cache list gets you nothing.
Each node below is described on its own terms, when it started, what it lists that the larger services do not, who keeps it running, and how it looked when it was last checked.
Germany
Opencaching.de is the oldest node and the one with the most behind it. It launched in 2005 into a caching community that was already large and well organised, with national forums, active clubs and a strong culture of well-built hides.
Density is what makes it usable. In much of Germany there are enough listings to plan a day around, which is the threshold an alternative service has to cross before anyone maintains a second account. Below that threshold an alternative is a curiosity; above it, it is a tool.
It also lists cache types and variants that the larger service does not publish, which for some owners is the whole reason to be there. Their hide has nowhere else to live.
Poland
Opencaching.pl serves a community that has consistently supported its own infrastructure. Polish cachers show up in the wider record more often than the country’s size would suggest: national forums, cross-border activity and a steady presence in discussions about how caches should be listed and rated.
The node has been running for well over a decade and is still maintained by volunteers. Like the German node, its value is concentrated: excellent where the community is dense, thin outside it.
The Netherlands
The Dutch node is smaller and quieter than the German and Polish ones, and it has had periods of low activity. It exists, it answers, and it serves the people who use it. A visitor should check current listing density in the specific area they are heading to rather than assuming national coverage.
The United States
Opencaching.us is the node most often confused with Garmin’s opencaching.com, which was a different project entirely and closed in 2015. The volunteer-run American node is not that site and did not inherit its data.
It is the clearest illustration of the density problem. The United States has an enormous number of caches, almost all listed on Geocaching.com, and a parallel service in that environment struggles to reach the point where checking it is worth the click. The node continues; the reason to use it is usually principle rather than coverage.
What to check before relying on any node
Three questions settle whether a node is worth an account for your purposes.
First, density where you actually cache. Not nationally, in the specific area. A node can be healthy in one region and empty two hours away.
Second, recency. Are new caches still being listed this year, and are logs still being written? A site that answers but has published nothing in eighteen months is an archive rather than a service.
Third, maintenance signals. Are the forums answered? Do reported problems get fixed? Volunteer projects live or die on whether anyone is still doing the unglamorous work, and that is visible from the outside if you look.
Check before you travel, not after
The practical instruction for a visiting cacher is short: look at the local node’s map for the specific area you are going to, a week before you go.
Why a national network can work where an international one cannot
The four nodes above have different histories and one structural advantage in common, and it is the reason this model outlasted every attempt at a global alternative.
A cache database is only useful at density. A cacher will use a second service if it shows them somewhere worth going this weekend, and that requires enough listings within an hour’s drive, not enough listings in the world. A national network needs to reach that threshold once, inside one set of borders, and after that the loop is self-sustaining: local owners list locally because local finders are looking there.
An international service needs to reach the same threshold everywhere simultaneously, or it looks empty to every individual visitor no matter how many caches it holds in total. That is a far harder problem, and it is the one the commercial alternatives failed to solve.
The national nodes also inherit something a global service cannot buy: an existing community with a shared language, its own forum, its own events and its own arguments, the same national character caching around the world describes from the other side. The website is the smaller half of what keeps them running.
Where the model is fragile
The same structure that makes these networks durable makes them dependent on a small number of people.
Each node is run by volunteers, usually a handful, often the same ones for a decade or more. The software is maintained in the gaps between other commitments. Nothing about that is unstable in the short run and all of it is a succession problem in the long run, because a project that has never had to hand over is a project that has never tested whether it can.
The evidence to watch for is not whether the site answers. It is whether new people are appearing in the maintenance and moderation roles, which is why the checks described above look at recent listings and forum activity rather than at uptime.
Questions people actually ask
Which Opencaching node should I use?
The one for the country you cache in. They do not share data, so an account on the German node is of no use in Poland. If you cache across borders you need an account on each node you care about.
Do the nodes share logins or caches?
No. Separate databases, separate accounts, separate moderation. A cache listed on Opencaching.de exists only there. Some owners cross-list manually, with the maintenance cost that implies.
Are these sites in English?
Partly. Each node's first language is the national one and the interface translation varies. Listings themselves are usually written in the local language, because they are written for local cachers. Machine translation handles most of it well enough to find a container.
Is there a UK or French Opencaching node?
Not an active one comparable to the four covered here. Several countries have had attempts that did not reach a sustainable size. Where a national community is small, the cost of running a parallel listing service outweighs what it adds.
Why is Germany's node the strongest?
It started first, in 2005, and it launched into a large, organised caching community that already had national forums and clubs. Density compounds: the more caches a node lists, the more reason there is to check it, which is why the gap between the leading node and the rest has widened rather than closed.
