Another Benchmark Geo-Bomb Scare

Just when you thought it was safe to return to GZ, another geo-bomb scare has been reported – this time in the American state of Virginia.

According to local broadcaster NBC29, Virginia State Police responded to a so-called suspicious package at the Virginia Department of Transportation Workers’ Memorial on Sunday.

The offending package.

Investigators say visitors at the Afton Mountain rest stop on Interstate 64 near Charlottesville spotted a rubbish bag with the words “Not Trash” written on it hanging from the memorial around 11.00am on Sunday.

According to Virginia State Police, “bomb technicians responded to the scene and through their investigation determined the package was part of a GPS geocache hunt”.

Seven hours later, the memorial – which honours the sacrifices made by state highway transportation workers – was re-opened to members of “the travelling public”.

It appears that the cache in question is GC25RNF What A View, which has generated 10 Favourite points since it was placed in March 2010 by owners turnersrugs and madmcadams. The site is also home to several waymarks and historic benchmarks.
