Two Thumbs-Up For Oz Mega

Signal and Kevin Swain rate the Oz Mega.

Geocachers NZ and My GeoGear store owner Catherine Swain (GC handle: Kevs_Team) reports back on her recent trip with husband Kevin to the Oz Mega in Albury, Wodonga.

“If you’re still considering whether to go to GC35TTR NZ Mega this October, I would highly recommend it!

We recently attended the Easter Oz Mega (GC2Q4JF) and loved it.  It was a tiring journey, driving three days there and back from our home in the Queensland locality of Redcliffe, and being at the shop every day of the event, but we were able to meet so many geocachers and catch up with some old friends, especially our Kiwi ones.

Being our first Mega event, we weren’t quite sure what to expect.  Every day we had a stream of people coming to the shops, but as you’d expect, most were out having fun caching!  In the evenings, there was entertainment provided, from screening movies to performances by Babba (an Abba tribute group).

The campers were in high spirits, many decorating their sites with lights. And with loads of families and dogs present, the venue had a great family-fun atmosphere.

The Oz Mega even broke a couple of Southern Hemisphere records. It now has the record for the most individual people on its registration papers (830) and the largest geocaching flashmob record (720).

Lots of effort was put in for the children, with activities including a night trail, an Easter egg hunt and nightly giveaways.  I participated in the helicopter drop and won our own pathtag.  Pathtags were very popular here, with nightly pathtag swap events.  Another popular activity was Munzee hunting.

Being at the shop, Kev and I missed out on most of the caching, but everyone we talked too was spending the majority of their day out raiding all the local caches.  Because of the sheer volume of hides, strangers turned into friends as they all cached in groups – a few even went all through the night.  I think that’s what we missed the most, not joining in and making even more friends while caching together.

I can’t think of one negative thing to say about the event.  We all had fun and appreciated the huge amount of effort the committee put in. Looking forward to when we can attend another!”
