He’s back … and quite literally.

Since OpenCaching launched its first piece of official merchandise – a collectible Opie pathtag – four score and however many months ago, the oh-so-cute mascot has been keeping a rather low profile.

However, It’s Not About The Numbers has learnt that during this time the OX frontman was actually busy modelling for three more tags – on which he appears as a GPSr-fanatical Uncle Sam, a conquering hero at this year’s Teva Mountain Games, and toasting marshmallows round a campfire.

As with its first pathtag, OpenCaching’s subsquent designs have to-date only been offered to guests at Garmin-affiliated events – including American summer highlights GeoWoodstock IX and the MidWest Geobash.

For those unable to attend or who couldn’t smooze a Garmin representative, the alternate way to guarantee ownership has been to spend US$110 on a deal the listing service worked out with manufacturer Pathtags. To qualify, OX fans must order their own pathtags, choosing the free design created by OpenCaching for the back of their signature item. Other reverse offerings normally cost an extra US10 cents per tag. For their loyalty, customers then receive one of the full Opie pathtags with their order.

In its online announcement from March 4th, Garmin wrote: “We worked with the Pathtags crew to design a special Opie Pathtag, and we were jazzed about how simple it was. And now you can add Opie to your collection – and to your own custom tags that you create!

“We’re thrilled to announce that the new Opie/ tag back will be available to anyone making a tag – at no additional cost! – and every person who uses this new back will also get one of the new Opie tags.

“It’s about the only way to get the new Opie tag – unless you’re a lucky winner of future Garmin blog and event promotions (or find one in a cache, of course).”

… Or you’re an It’s Not About The Numbers readers, that is. You may recall a while back that OpenCaching sent us a selection of branded merchandise to give away – and now that time has finally come.

To put your name in the draw for one of five prizes, just tell us your OpenCaching handle. Two lucky winners will earn themselves a rare OX cap, lanyard, pin and original Opie pathtag, while the three runners-up will receive a lanyard, pin and sticker set. Entries close at noon on Friday, 23rd September (NZ time). Usual INATN terms and conditions apply.

*Of course, if you have one of the newer Opie tags, kjwx is totally open to bribery and/or trades.
