Tsunami Appeal: Wave Of Support for Japan

First Japan faced a wave of destruction from its 8.9 magnitude earthquake, 10 metre-high tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown. Now a wave of support from geocachers worldwide is following.

Today British webstore The Geocaching Shop began pre-selling a Japanese micro-geocoin for £5.99, with £1 of every sale going to the Red Cross’ Japan Tsunami Appeal.

Measuring 25mm by 2.5mm, the nickel trackable depicts Japan’s flag with  the GC.com logo on its reverse. It was created by Japanese webstore CacheKuni and manufacturer Geoswag as part of Groundspeak’s Country Micro Geocoin series.

The British vendor blogged: “We have ordered some Japanese micro geocoins and for every one we sell we are going to donate £1 to help those affected by the recent tsunami in Japan. Please help us help them or give directly through redcross.org.uk.

“Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that has been affected directly or indirectly.”

Similar sentiments were also expressed on Japanese caches listed at GC.com, most notably GC2173Z Underbody Of A Jet Plane – sited near the airport in Sendai, the city worst affected by the tsunami generated by last Friday’s massive quake.

Its owner tmiya hails from Miyagi, where local police estimate 10,000 of the prefecture’s 2.3 million residents have died.

Though this hide had been found only nine times in its two-year history, it now has 18 watchers and features 38-plus condolence messages from geocachers across the globe.

Many are hoping for news that tmiya, a parent to two young daughters, is safe. Unfortunately, with predictions that the country’s death toll may top 10,000, it’s envitable Mother Nature will have claimed many of our fellow seekers there.
