Google gives interesting Insight into listing services

Google Insight provides some interesting data on peoples interest in geocaching listing services. For those unfamiliar with the tool Google Insight:

analyzes a portion of worldwide Google web searches from all Google domains to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you’ve entered, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. You can choose to see data for select Google properties, including Web search, Images, Product search, and News search

Obviously we all know is the biggest listing service and as a result has the greatest interest in it. Thus the graph for this is quite boring:

What is considerably more interesting is the graph comparing the other listing services:

Note that different search terms produce different results. For the purposes of the above graphs I trialled a number of different terms for sites and used the term that produced the highest result.

It is also worth understanding how the numbers are reached. Again from the Google Insight information:

The numbers on the graph reflect how many searches have been done for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. They don’t represent absolute search volume numbers, because the data is normalized and presented on a scale from 0-100. Each point on the graph is divided by the highest point, or 100. When we don’t have enough data, 0 is shown. The numbers next to the search terms above the graph are summaries, or totals.

The results are quite interesting and show quite clearly the interest in each of the listing services. In terms of searches through Google, Geocaching Australia and are the largest of the services outside of They also appear to have an upward trend so interest continues to grow. The Germans are clearly geocaching mad as they also have the second highest regional interest in searches (the Czech Republic is first), whilst the Australians, who don’t feature in the top ten, are clearly taken with their local listing service.

Navicaching and the currently being saved Terracaching still show prominently but do appear to be trending downward. At present the other independent Opencaching sites (.uk, .us etc) don’t have enough results to show on the graph., the new entrant in the listing service arena last year, shows as the large red spike at the end of the graph. A closer examination of what has occurred over the last 12 months is quite telling:

The graph clearly shows coming in with a bang. Anyone who reads this blog won’t be surprised by that as there was considerable speculation leading into it’s release. Throughout this time interest in Geocaching Australia stay fairly constant. Those Aussies are a loyal bunch! (Good thing I married one 😉 ). But the really interesting part of this graph is seeing the way that interest in drops dramatically following the release of Those open-caching mad Germans clearly showed huge interest in However over the last couple of months the initial interest in has died away and they are now ranking third at this time of those services shown in this graph. At the same time the interest in has risen and appears to be on the way back to it’s normal levels.

Now, I’m not one to wildly speculate 😉 and I realise that there are numerous variables I’m ignoring here (like the fact the intense interest in also came from other countries) but if you’re going to force me into it – it would tend to show that the Germans have not been that taken with and have returned home to the comfort and safety of

It will certainly be interesting to run these again in 6 months time to see how the listing landscape may have changed.
