Magellan announce release of eXplorist 310

Magellan have this month announced the release of the eXplorist 310.

“The eXplorist 310 is a key addition to our outdoor lineup as it provides users with a high-quality navigation device at an outstanding value,” said Justin Doucette, Director of Product Marketing, for Magellan GPS. “From novice to expert, Magellan now offers the right handheld GPS receiver for anyone who ventures into the outdoors anywhere in the world!”

The higher spec GPSr for those who don’t want to fork out a fortune is probably a good thing.

During 2010, Magellan reinvented its eXplorist series targeting the outdoor enthusiast market, starting with the introduction of the eXplorist GC in March and continuing with the high-end eXplorist 510, 610, and 710 GPS receivers in July.  The high-end eXplorist models each feature a 3.0-inch color touch screen and are equipped with a 3.2 mega-pixel camera, microphone, and speaker to enable users to record and share their adventures with friends. The eXplorist GC is the only color handheld GPS receiver exclusively dedicated to geocaching.  Each of the new eXplorist products were welcomed with positive reviews from both consumers and editors. The introduction of the eXplorist 310 demonstrates Magellan’s continued commitment to outdoor navigation with more products planned later in 2011.

More products in 2011? I will be waiting with interest to see what they produce. It is a very interesting time in the handheld GPSr market.

A vibrant, transflective color screen allows for the best readability in direct sunlight. To zero in on the exact location of a geocache, favorite fishing spot, or the next summit, the SiRFstarIII GPS chipset provides accuracy of 10-15 feet (3-5 meters).

The eXplorist 310 supports paperless geocaching, which allows you to download more than 20 unique characteristics of each cache, including name, location, description, hider, size, difficulty, terrain, hint, spoilers, attributes, and last 20 user logs among a number of other details.

The eXplorist 310 will be available in March 2011 at an MSRP of USD $199.99

On Amazon the only GPSr I can find that has similar features for a similar price is the now heavily marked down Garmin eTrex Summit HC. So it looks like this little eXplorist from Magellan might turn out to be a very good buy!
